A decade ago, Facebook was enough. Today, when your name gets handed out, the customer Googles you first, and if your site looks the part they pick up the phone. If not, they skip you for the next name on the list.
Own your domain, something like yourbusiness.com. Not a free page on someone else’s platform, and not just a Facebook profile. It’s the one piece of your online presence you actually control, and no algorithm change can take it from you.
Lock it down with SSL
SSL is the little padlock next to the address, the difference between http and https. Without it, the browser flags your site as “Not secure,” and a customer about to punch in their address and card number won’t like that one bit.
Most decent hosting providers hand you a free certificate and renew it automatically. If yours doesn’t, you’ve outgrown your host. A secure site ranks higher on Google, and plenty of customers won’t even visit one that isn’t secured.
Get found
You’ll hear people call SEO a dark art, but for most local trades it really comes down to a few basics:
- Claim your Google Business Profile. It's the single biggest thing you can do to show up for "plumber near me" searches.
- Put your service area, your trades, and your phone number in plain text, so Google can actually read them.
- Keep the site fast and built for phones. That's where people search, usually standing in someone's driveway.
- Get reviews, then reply to them. Real, recent reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals there is.
You’re not trying to manipulate anything. Be the obvious choice for “who does this near me” and the ranking takes care of itself.
